How long have you been at Saffron? 1.5 years

Why belly dance? Why not!? It's beautiful and celebrates all bodies. And it feels good! Plus all of the beautiful costumes and sparkles are hard to say no to.

How did you find Saffron Dance, and what keeps you coming back? We moved here 2.5 years ago, and I was looking for a place to get back into dance lessons. I was so happy to see that Saffron was not only a place where I could take lessons, but that their were many different levels, styles, teachers, and even companies to join!

What were your thoughts after your first class? After talking with Saphira on the phone one evening to decide where to start because I had danced previously, I took my first class with Elena. I remember feeling so excited that I had taken a class and a little bummed because it was Elena's last class before going overseas for a while. Since then, I am happy to say that I have had the privilege of taking many classes with Elena and other fantastic teachers, and I am so happy to have found this dance community.

Can you speak a bit about your experience in Student Company and working closely with faculty and fellow dancers? jumped right into dancing in a Student Company as soon as I could. I attended the assessment class and felt at home...as seen after by happy tears followed by a big hug from Saphira. I danced in one company last year, and it was wonderful to get close to other dancers being new in the studio. During the summer, I was in a combo company was able to meet and dance with more lovely dancers. This year I am dancing in 2 companies, both with many people I have not danced with before. I have very much enjoyed my company dancing experience at Saffron, leading me to commit to 2 this year instead of just one. :) Last year, I was even lucky enough to have 3 different teachers for my company for the different shows, allowing me to learn different choreography flavors and styles from the different teachers.

Besides belly dance, what do you like to do to stay active? Taking my dog for his multiple walks each day is my favorite form of exercise :-) I also teach barre and practice yoga regularly.

What are your dance goals for the future? I want to become comfortable dancing solo again and hopefully dance in a Performance Development Circle this year.

Anything else you would like to share? I am very thankful for my first dance momma/teacher, Katya Faris. The foundations, teachings, and support she gave me and continues to give from afar have been such a blessing, and I will be forever grateful that dance brought us together.

How she inspires us |  When I met Katie she was new to the area. She had quite a lot of belly dance experience but was looking to start taking classes again. I remember how emotional she became when she realized she had found a new dance home at Saffron. It made me happy/proud just to be a part of a studio that could affect her in such a positive way! Since then I had the pleasure of having Katie in my 2016/17 Student Company. She is a lovely dancer that can be relied on to learn choreography, practice and encourage the other ladies in the room with her.  And she is always willing to help.  A few months ago there was a full week of construction at Saffron in order to give the downstairs space a HUGE facelift.  A few days before, Katie emailed me asking if she could volunteer her time to help. We had not asked students for help, Katie simply knew that we were working on the space with a limited timeline and thought to offer her help to assist us. It was beyond generous of her, and her contribution will not be forgotten.  Considerate and hard-working, Katie is
the kind of person that most of us strive to be, and we are lucky to have her as a Saffronita! - Linda
