Belly dance rejuvenates my soul... I have such an inner peace and joy in my heart. -Kim

Saffronita Day

There are so many wonderful things I could say about what this weekend's Saffronita Day revealed about our community, but I think it would be better heard directly from some of our own Saffronitas...

As I reflect back on this Mother's Day, I wanted to share some thoughts on a pretty important mom to Saffron.... my own.   Many of you may have met my mom at shows or seen her at studio events, but I have yet to share her true influence on our community.  The first thing you should know is that my mom is the most generous creature I have ever met.  If she meets someone in need, she steps up. Whether she has enough emotional bandwidth or time is not relevant.  If she crosses someone in need, she doesn't turn away.

Saffronita of the Month - May

Why belly dance?
I tried belly dance on a whim, with a bunch of friends from church.  It sounded like something fun to do with people I don't usually get to spend time with during the week.

If you read Saffron's Mission & Values, you'll notice that "community" and "collaboration" are two of our five Core Values.  We aim to use these values as guidelines by which we make decisions, design our programming, and conceptualize our role as a studio.  This weekend we hosted "Wanderlust," a very special Salla show that perfectly reflected the values of community and collaboration and reminded me of why we make it a point to recognize the importance of these ideals.

Embracing Change

I find that the people in my life either love or abhor change. I'm not sure if I was born with it or developed it by necessity, but I love change. I am scared neither of what predictability I leave behind or of the unknown that lies ahead. Rather, living each day is almost like opening a present that you have no idea of who it's from or what it will be.

This weekend we were honored to welcome the world-renowened artist and current director of the Bellydance Superstars, Moria Chappell, to Saffron for workshops and for what was a magical Salla show on Saturday evening.  Reflecting on the night I am filled with pride once again to see how many talented artists we are able to support at Saffron.  From faculty, to students, to friends of the studio, this Salla showcased the spirit of collaboration and community that is so integral to our identity as a business.  I hope you enjoy these sneak peak images from the evening's performances.

The "Effortless" Illusion

In our dance form, we frequently note that when performing at her best a dancer looks effortless in her execution.   Ironically, however, if you ask that dancer how much work, hours in the studio, number of years, workshops and practicing that went into developing this ability to look "effortless," she would likely share that her journey to dance effortlessly took tremendous work.  This rings true for every dancer I have ever known including those who come to the dance with natural talent.

Perhaps one of the most rewarding aspects of my role at Saffron is having the honor of working with our amazing teachers. And while we continue to attract and grow new talent, we occasionally have to bid farewell to members of our faculty.  Today I would like to take the opprtunity to say goodbye to Adriane and Tesia, two wonderful Saffron teachers who are transitioning to new opportunities and opening new chapters in their lives.  But before they go I thought it only right to honor them as our Saffronitas of the Month and to share with you why and how they inspire us.

Show Reflections

Coming off an evening as dynamic as that of Sunday night's Winter Showcase always forces me into self and studio reflection.  It's no secret that show day was an extremely intense and adrenaline-filled experience for us as a community.  But each time we do a show together, and particularly when we launch a new venue, I am completely and utterly amazed at the team we have to execute a full length dance production.  Within a two hour period, we raised a stage complete with 12 ft black backdrop, professional lighting, multiple-camera videography, and created a seating environment for our 200 closest friends and family in preparation for a very exciting evening for dancers & guests.

The women who comprise this community continue to amaze, delight, humble and humor me.  We created the concept of a "Saffronita" a little over a year ago. You know, a woman who shimmies in unexpected places and leaves trails of glitter in her wake.  You can recognize her because she is generous in spirit, artistically supportive and comfortable in her skin. What we didn’t realize was how many our Saffronitas found extensions of this definition lovingly and humorously in their everyday lives so I wanted to share some of their feedback.

Welcome to Barre Tech!

If the Saffron community has revealed one constant attribute, it is that we are always evolving. We have already shared photos and descriptions of our new cozy nooks and crannies for our dancers to lounge and convene, as well as our newly and fully stocked boutique of coins, glam and glitter. Now we are ready to introduce more exciting evolutions in the Saffron family. We are so excited to welcome Barre Tech, a dance-based barre fitness studio.  Barre Tech will launch daily classes in our downstairs studio, next to the café.

What was your biggest surpise after starting belly dance? |  "Belly dance is for women of all ages, shapes, and types.  You can see the joy it brings this variety of women in class and on the stage. The dance that is presented is more beautiful for having this variety of women than if all the students were cut from the same mold."

Returning to Your Roots

I can’t begin to express how excited I am to return to the Kennedy Center for this evening's Alvin Ailey performance.  The Alvin Ailey Dance Company has been an inspiration to me personally and an influence on me artistically since I first saw them when I began my own modern dance journey at the age of 13. That’s right Saffronitas, I actually had a dance life before belly dance!  So much of why I fell in love the genre of work that Alvin Ailey reflects has also been evident in my journey for belly dance as an art form.

A Huge Hunk of Gratitute

It is no accident that one of the core values of Saffron Dance is "community" and no better example of how that manifests than with our brand new website.  The entire creation  - from function to form & pros to presentation  - was created, built, designed and authored almost entirely by Saffronitas!  We think our new online presentation finally reflects the diversity, creativity and collaboration that oozes throughout our space.
