There is something very relaxing about meeting up with friends after a long day to dance your hearts out... -Stacey

As I reflect back on this Mother's Day, I wanted to share some thoughts on a pretty important mom to Saffron.... my own.   Many of you may have met my mom at shows or seen her at studio events, but I have yet to share her true influence on our community.  The first thing you should know is that my mom is the most generous creature I have ever met.  If she meets someone in need, she steps up. Whether she has enough emotional bandwidth or time is not relevant.  If she crosses someone in need, she doesn't turn away.

Why belly dance? It's so much fun! Originally I came to belly dance because I was turning 40 and wanted to try something new, and this was unlike anything I had done before and completely out of my comfort zone. I have struggled with body image my whole life, and belly dance has really helped me gain an appreciation for my body and to love it for all that it can do. I love seeing women of all sizes dancing and seeing how their bodies move. Dance is a challenge for me, both mentally and physically, and it forces me to be less rigid and more fluid in my movement.

Why belly dance? “Transformance through performance”. This motto I think just about sums it up for me. I flirted with belly dance for a short while when I was young and then forgot about it. I joined Saffron at a time in which I was looking to grow a greater appreciation for everything divine feminine. I feel belly dance does just that, express the quintessential divine feminine qualities, and studying and performing belly dance has been transformative on many levels, personally.

Why belly dance? I discovered that belly dance is an exquisite, graceful, expressive dance form that fits beautifully on all women - no matter what size or shape. Belly dance provides a fun way to burn calories and tone up, and Saffron provides a friendly, encouraging atmosphere.

Why bellydance Why not?! I’ve had this discussion with several Saffronitas closer to my age, and we have concluded that we are not “normal”. Fine by me. I dance because it is FUN; because it is a vigorous yet gentler-on-the-joints exercise that challenges my body and brain in new and strategic ways.

As a community composed primarily of women, the role of motherhood is particularly present in our lives.  Many of our faculty and students are mothers themselves; some became mothers during their time at the studio, and it's always a joy to witness dancers as they transition into that new and exciting phase of their lives.  And many of us are lucky to have extremely loving mothers ourselves, who have supported us in innumerable ways.

Why bellydance?  |  I've always enjoyed dancing, but I feel more of a connection with bellydance than any other form. It's fun to challenge my body to move in such different ways.

Why bellydance? So many reasons! To stay active, learn to move more gracefully, tap into your artistic side, learn about stage makeup and hair, bolster your sewing skills (and get more comfortable with sequins and sparkles!), become less inhibited by learning to perform, build amazing friendships based on teamwork and shared goals and experiences, and take all this self-confidence and positivity out into the other parts of your life.
