What is a Student Company?
Student Company participation provides dancers additional opportunities for artistic development and personal growth. Student Companies present group choreographies throughout the year at various theatre dance concerts presented by Saffron Dance, and may be offered additional performance opportunities at festivals and events as they emerge.
What are the differences between the various Student Companies?
The style of dance (oriental, tribal, world fusion) and technique level of the choreographies performed. Generally, student dance companies require a strong command of the technique and movement through the Oriental 1+ level and above.
How do I join?
Membership is determined through Company Technique Assessments held every summer. All students interested in joining a Company must attend an assessment, after which they will be invited into in a level-appropriate Company.
What are the requirements for participation?
Company membership requires a one-year commitment to ensure fluidity and consistency in developing and blocking choreographies. Company members are required to participate in a weekly company class, a Saffron technique class and a weekly company rehearsal. (Students are welcome to enroll in additional classes if they wish.) Company members are required to purchase a company costume and possibly props (e.g., veil, cane, zills). The price for company costumes ranges between $200-$275.
What is the difference between a performance class and a performance company?
Performance classes are designed for students interested in learning a group choreography for a specific performance during a given session. Company participants commit to one year and develop multiple choreographies for ongoing performance opportunities throughout the year.
